Re: Rank all '46-thru-'49 NFL/AAFC League Champions

To try to set the record straight: The Cleveland Browns lost eleven players from their 1949 roster including not only Lou Saban, but also their best guard in Ed Ulinski and another very good guard in Bob Gaudio. They also lost their best running back, outside of Marion Motley, in Edgar Jones. Jones ...

Ford only played 5 regular season games for the Browns in 1950. He was slugged by Pat Harder in the 5th game against the Cards which resulted in a broken jaw. Ford missed the rest of the regular season.

Ford wasn't picked until the second round of the dispersal draft. Most teams passed on him twice.

Re: Quarterback "Storylines"

Apparently, in the 1950 AAFC dispersal draft, the 49ers took guard Knox Ramsey in the first round and defensive end Ed Henke in the second. Ramsey ended up playing for the Cardinals for some reason and I think that Henke played in Canada. Henke joined the 49ers sometime after 1950. Philadelphia was ...

Re: Quarterback "Storylines"

I don't think that many people realize that the NFL 49ers of 1950 were not anywhere as good as the AAFC 49ers of 1948 and 1949. Here are some of the players gone in 1950 for the 49ers: 1. T John Woudenberg - Often played on both offense and defense. Perennial all league 2nd team tackle. Not bad as t...

Re: Quarterback "Storylines"

There is no doubt about Graham's greatness but other than Buck Shaw's San Francisco team pushing the Browns in their own western division of the AAFC, there really were no other teams that could compete with Cleveland. It was kind of like the Philadelphia Stars in the USFL, though the Michigan Pant...

Re: Successful NFL HCs who weren't successful as college HCs

Blanton Collier's coaching staff at Kentucky had Don Shula, Howard Schnellenberger, and Chuck Knox among others, but despite that, Collier was not only fired after the 1961 season but was hung in effigy. Collier liked to coach but was not crazy about the recruiting end of college coaching. Another p...

Tsk,tsk! Don't you mean the A Formation?

Not sure if they still used the A Formation in 1950. Maybe.

Re: '50/'51 Giants

The Cleveland Browns were the main rival to the New York Giants during the late 50's. Jim Brown was a rookie in 1957 and the Browns won the Eastern Conference that year over the New York Giants. Sure, the Giants used their "gap control" against other teams, but I am sure that Jim Brown and...
