Re: Almost a coin flip to decide a playoff spot in 1970?
I came across an article written before the final weekend of the 1970 season. It said that if the Giants, Lions and Cowboys all won, the Giants would win the NFC East, and the Cowboys and Lions would decide the NFC wild card by a coin flip. The Giants got blown out and the Cowboys and Lions both wo...

Re: 2017 Record and Fact Book?
Does anybody know if the NFL is going to do a 2017 Record and Fact Book (Digital or print)? It is usually posted by mid to late July. Thanks I hate to think they ended it as it was an indispensable resource. If anybody here has contacts within the NFL PR department infrastructure perhaps inquiries ...

Re: Three 50+ yard field goals in last two minutes of a game
Happened in the Packers/Cowboys playoff game. Based on Pro Football Reference, I am guessing this has never happened before. PFR's play by play data, which only goes back to 1999, only has three occurrences where TWO 50+ field goals were even attempted, and only one where they both were made. Olind...

Re: Tie games since '74 with biggest impact on final standin
Broncos-Packers tie at County in '87. Need a tie-breaker expert again (Ivan?). What happens if Broncos lose? Both they and Cleveland finish at 10-5, neither played each other (on MNF, Week #3) thanks to the game been cancelled outright. Both had (and would have still had) identical 8-3 conference r...

Re: Tie games since '74 with biggest impact on final standin
As for the two wild card spots? You tell me! Chiefs (9-7) would have had a 7-7 conference record instead of 6-7-1 that they actually did have. Oilers and Steelers both 6-6 conference record. All three at 500! Steelers beat Chiefs but Chiefs beat Houston who in turn swept Steelers making Oilers an a...

Re: Tie games since '74 with biggest impact on final standin
Since a regular-season overtime period was instituted in 1974, tie games such as the one last Sunday night have become exceedingly rare, occurring with a frequency of less than once a season. Which one of these tie games has been the most significant as far as playing a role in divisional/playoff r...

Re: 1974: Dolphins vs Steelers
Had Miami somehow knocked down that pass to Clarence Davis what would've happened the next week? I assume the game would be in the Orange Bowl but with the crazy home field rules back then who knows.... Had the Dolphins met the Steelers in the 1974 AFC Championship Game, it would have been played i...

Re: Question about 1969 AFL season
Even before it went to the four divisions and had a tiebreaker based on total points in two games (as with the Rams and the Colts both finishing 11-1-2 in 1967), it had the same plan since 1960 to see who qualified for the Playoff Bowl. I was noticing that Detroit and San Francisco both finished at...

Re: Question about 1969 AFL season
As we all know, the American Football League for its final season adopted a new playoff format featuring extra teams which effectively inaugurated the concept of a wild card playoff to professional football. This was done to give an extra postseason weekend to keep pace with the NFL. Under the new ...
