Re: Worst player in HOVG? Best player not in?
Hard to choose one significant omission, but among them: Abe Woodson Lionel Taylor Earl Faison Houston Antwine Mike Stratton George Christensen John Niland Tommy Davis Mark Gastineau Mike Kenn Marvin Powell There aren’t many head-scratchers among those already in, though I could see Jack Kemp making...

Re: What in the world was up with Johnny Lujack?
Was just looking at the Wikipedia article for Davey O’Brien, and it appears he had a really interesting and full life after football. He worked as an FBI agent for several years, then later in land development for H.L. Hunt, in the oil business, and as advisor to Lamar Hunt during the founding of th...

Re: Cam Newton
Cam Newton’s definitely not a HoFer as of now. He had one great year (2015j, four years that were varying degrees of very good (2011-2013 and 2018), three just okay years (2014 and 2016-2017), and one where he barely played (2019). By QB standards, his career is short, which doesn’t help. Not so sur...

Re: Herschel Walker
I think he's HoVG even without taking the USFL into account if you take his total all purpose yards into consideration. Which I think one should.JameisLoseston wrote:Slam dunk for HOVG? How highly do we value the USFL? It seemed to be a difference maker for Jim Kelly.

Re: PFT reports that blue ribbon committee
I don’t think it’s necessarily a ploy to induct Art Modell, but he’s the kind of candidate who could benefit from this approach. In fact, one could see three of this type of Contributor (Modell, Tagliabue, Kraft) and two of this type of Coach (Flores, Coryell) be the ones who get in. I just hope the...

Re: PFT reports that blue ribbon committee
From what the article John linked to says, this bypass will only hold for the 15 blue ribbon panel group, not the class of five regular inductees. It’s pretty clear there’s sufficient concern that the “whole-15-yes-or-no vote” could backfire, with no one getting in. The bad thing about this is that ...

USA Today’s top 100 QBs
Eh, another weakly thought through argument-starter list, for top 100 QBs, from USA Today: https://ftw.usatoday.com/2019/09/nfl-100-best-quarterbacks Apparently doesn’t go far enough back to include folks like Van Brocklin, Graham, Luckman, and folks like that. Apparently based on AV, with postseaso...

Re: Top wide receivers in history
Agreed, though for me, James K. Polk tops the underappreciated presidents list, with Harry S Truman in hot pursuit. Top overrated would be Andrew Jackson and Woodrow Wilson.JeffreyMiller wrote:BTW, one of my favorite presidents in Grover Cleveland … a much underappreciated first executive!

Re: Vontaze Burfict suspended for the rest of the season
"Big" lineman from those earlier areas were often in the 240-250 lb. ranger--sometimes less. Yup. Betraying my age, I remember when 300 pound AFL OT Sherman Plunkett was considered freakishly heavy. No one else was that big back then. Article about Plunkett here: https://www.si.com/vault/...
